The ART of Effective Communication

ARTICULATION:

Multi-media forms like television, radio, and the internet have not been around nearly as long as writing or art but they have one of the biggest influences on society. The radio is prime for utilizing tone and inflection to convey moods, atmospheres, and vibes to the audience. Sometimes its not just what one says, but how they say it too that determines the speaker's effectiveness of communication. Video combines verbal and visual communication making it extra potent, spreading its influences to the masses. Below are a few of my multi-media projects created during my time at Penn State that helped me learn how to spread a message though wording, sounds, and sights.

Multi Media

Women's Healthcare

All too often people think that the only purpose for birth control is to prevent pregnancy. However, there are many more uses for contraceptives such as acne relief, menstrual regulation, hormone imbalance treatment, and various other serious ailments. This issue remained under wraps for decades until Sandra Fluke made appeared in front of Congress to address the issue of women's healthcare and the lack of coverage by insurance companies. Little did she know that her statements would cause such a ruckus in the media reigniting the debate. This video project discusses the history of women's healthcare and contraceptive coverage with interviews of my fellow Penn State peers and an appearance by Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Miller.

Students Against Stereotypes

Stereotypes are widely held but fixed and over simplified images or ideas of a particular person, place, or thing. They can be positive or negative and affect people across the globe. Sometimes they make us laugh, but can they actually have detrimental psychological effects on people? Its time to stop making these social snap-judgments because we can never be exposed to someone's true character until we get to know them. This video was created for the Advocacy Fair my English class created and tries to debunk the use of social snap judgements.

This I Believe

It sounds like an easy task, but trying to say what we stand for can be a lot more complicated than expected. After some careful thought, I pin-pointed one thing that my family has always prided itself on: ingenuity. Coming up with unique ideas and seeing through the visible surface of people, places, and things allows one to view the world with an open mind. Therefore, I believe in deeper meanings and that creativity and wit assist us in noticing the potential in our lives. Just click on the orange box to hear my podcast about what I believe in.
